Just because your business has slowed during the off-season doesn't mean it has to stop. Now is the time to build your business by hiring and training before things pick up this summer.
Give yourself more time to hire
Hiring a new employee is an important decision that requires a lot of thought, insight, and quality interviewing. Have you ever had to make a quick hire during the busy season because you needed the manpower but ended up firing that technician because he or she was detrimental to your business? Hiring during the off season allows you to interview more people and spend more time making an important decision.
Training takes time
If you've been following this blog, you know there's a lot to learn in the HVAC industry. That training takes time. In his book Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell wrote that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become "world class" at something. I don't expect your technicians to be training for 10,000 hours, but practice in the slow season means experienced technicians in the busiest months. That means fewer mistakes, less time teaching, which opens up your business to service more clients year-round.
